On creating Children of Shangri-Lost: “After meeting many new people in course of living in the United States, I have come across many people who are curious to know more about me and where I come from. When I share the heartbreaking story of how my family and many other thousands of families became refugees, surviving in the refugee camps in Nepal for more than 17 years before coming to the United States, people lose their breath and sympathize with me. This led me to I realize that the community around me is interested to know more about our experiences, so I called for a small team to work on a documentary to share our story. Since we are new in this country, there are some misperceptions about us in our new communities, who had no experience assimilating with diverse groups of people before. We understood that cultural discrepancies were keeping our new community and the Bhutanese community apart. We felt that it is our responsibility as students to bridge this gap between two communities by helping both to understand one another, so that we can all live as one community without being isolated from one another. I also want people to understand that people come to America to achieve their goals and to fulfill their dreams, but we came to America to be a part of it. We came here to live permanently in the pursuit of our new home, and we embrace our new home with pride.”
